Medieval Portraits

The 'March of Time' in print

I took these photographs at the Quintana, in Ascoli Piceno - an annual event, starting with a procession of townsfolk wearing the clothing of their ancestors and ending with the Palio.

The Piazza was packed so I had to - with help from a waiter - stand on a chair, balanced on a cafe table, at the edge of the square, wobbling around with my elderly zoom lens. At home, l saw that my shots showed both the faces immortalised in Renaissance art as well as those I see every day here in my village.  I wanted to convey that sense of 'muddle': are these paintings from 'then' or are they photographs from 'now'? I then layered the photographs with other images of textures and colours: rusty farm equipment, cracked paint and plaster, mud, newspapers and so on. Painstaking but it worked!

About the prints

These photographs are printed on the archival, heavy Hahnemuhle German Etching paper (310gsm). It feels soft and velvety but also somehow textured and could not have been more perfect.

You can buy the photographs in three sizes: 8" x 10", 12" x 15" and 16" x 20".
